Arising Issues

Mental Health

Being pressured by peers can be a stressful experience, whether it happens in person or online. It can decrease self-confidence and lead to poor academic performance, distancing from family members and friends, or an increase in depression and anxiety. If left untreated, this could eventually lead to engaging in self-harm or have suicidal thoughts.

03. Articles showcasing the arising problems

Body image dissatisfaction among adolescents is mostly attributable to the advent of social media in recent years. A 2018 study published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and Education uncovered that "the increasing time teens are exposed to idealised pictures of peers on social networking services represents a big challenge for them to develop a realistic and healthy body image".

“I think it was more because of the fear and the pressure that we tend to give ourselves like ‘what if I say something wrong’ or ‘what if I can’t help this person’,” said Wenbo on one of the common misperceptions youth face on understanding mental health.

“People care about what others think across all different age groups—and that influences how much they value different ideas and behaviors,” says Dr. Emily Falk at the University of Pennsylvania. She studies how social networks affect decision making. This is called social, or peer, influence.
